Susan Almon-Matangos, MS, CCC-SLP, is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist with over 40 years of experience. She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Jacksonville State University and her Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology from The University of Alabama. She has provided care to clients across the lifespan with diverse diagnostic conditions in settings including school, hospital, skilled nursing facility, outpatient clinic, and home health settings. In her previous role as a national clinical director for a contract therapy company, she developed training programs for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology focusing on clinical rehabilitation needs of older adults in post-acute care. Currently, she serves as the Lead Subject Matter Expert Writer for Speech-Language Pathology at Relias, where she leverages her clinical expertise and analysis of published research. She is a certified member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Pennsylvania Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Subject Matter Expert: Kirby P. Mayer, DPT PhD
Kirby P. Mayer, DPT, PhD, is an associate professor at College of Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky and a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Mayer is an educator, physical therapist, and scientist interested in improving outcomes for patients with critical illness. He is currently leading National Institute of Health grant-funded research to improve rehabilitation treatment for patients in the ICU. Dr. Mayer serves as a physical therapist and Director of Research for the University of Kentucky’s ICU Recovery Clinic, an interprofessional team providing medical and rehabilitative care to ICU survivors. Prior to his current position, Dr. Mayer worked in the medical and cardiothoracic ICUs as a physical therapist treating patients requiring mechanical ventilation, CRRT, and ECMO. Dr. Mayer’s research currently emphasizes improving how we assess and treat patients in the ICU as well as recovery phase of critical illness. Dr. Mayer is a Fellow of Critical Care Medicine and active in both the American College of Critical Care Medicine and American Physical Therapy Association.
